Function of the Circuit Breaker Panel

Each circuit breaker panel is connected to a group of components, this allows power to certain sections of your home or business. In the case of overload, the corresponding switch on the breaker panel trips, cutting off only that part of the home or business. Types of Circuit Breaker Panels

Portable Breaker: They are portable or mobile circuit breaker panels to facilitate some emergency or temporary uses.

How a Circuit Breaker Panel Works

The basic circuit breaker consists of a simple switch, it is connected to either a bimetallic strip or an electromagnet. The hot wire in the circuit connects to the two ends of the switch. When this switch is flipped on, electricity can flow from the bottom terminal, through the electromagnet, up to the moving contact, across to the stationary contract and out to the upper terminal. The electricity magnetizes the electromagnet, when the current jumps to unsafe levels, the electromagnet is strong enough to pull down a metal lever connected to the switch linkage. The entire linkage shifts and moving the contact away from the stationary contact to break the circuit and the electricity shuts off.

Many circuit breaker panels are designed with a bimetallic strip which works on the same principle. However, instead of energizing an electromagnet the high current bends a thin strip to move the linkage. Some circuit breakers use an explosive charge to throw the switch. When current rises above a certain level, its ignites explosive material, which drives a piston to open the switch. The simplest circuit protection is the fuse. The fuse disintegrate when it heats up above a certain level, if the current climbs too high, it burns up the wire. By destroying the fuse opens the circuit before the excess current can damage the building wiring.
